Bertha’s Mission still serving after over a decade

BEDFORD– Bertha’s Mission is a feeding ministry that has served those in need in the local area since September 2013. “God gave me the vision for a feeding ministry,” said Janice Nickeo-Pendergrass, owner of the mission, which serves over 100 meals every day they are open. Meals are prepared and distributed every Tuesday through Thursday.

In addition to serving meals at the Mission located at 512 Lincoln Ave in Bedford, on Wednesdays, they deliver over 130 meals to the elderly and those who need them. Randy Eads has been delivering and volunteering for almost a year. “I feel like I was sent here by the Lord,” he said. “Helping those in need in the community is all it’s about.” Though Bertha’s Mission is a faith-based organization, Janice Nickeo-Pendergrass stressed that all are welcome.

As of November 30, Bertha’s had served 21,899 meals this year, so it goes without saying that donations and volunteer hours are critical to helping the mission stay on its task. If anyone is interested in donating or being a volunteer, call 317-480-0085, go to the website www.berthasmission.com, or stop by the mission in person. The biggest fundraiser of the year, the First Step 5k Run, is taking place on January 1, and information on how to get involved is linked to the Bertha’s Mission webpage.

“Bertha’s isn’t a handout; it’s a hand up,” said Janice Nickeo-Pendergrass, “It’s food for the soul.”
