Robbery takes place at Bloomington IU Credit Union and Circle K, suspect arrested

BLOOMINGTON – Bloomington Police officers arrested a transient after he robbed the IU Credit Union near the IU campus and the Circle K on East Third Street.

Byron Gregory Johnson, 35, is facing two felony counts of robbery and two misdemeanor counts of theft and intimidation. The Monroe County Jail was unable to provide a booking photo of Johnson.

At approximately 3:50 p.m. on Tuesday, December 19, the Bloomington Police officers responded to the IU Credit Union at 510 East 17th Street after receiving a panic alarm.

When police arrived, they learned the credit union had been robbed.

The male suspect wore a tan coat, black pants, and a dark-colored face covering.

Officers checked the area but were unable to locate the male suspect.

According to investigators, the male entered the credit union and approached a teller, who handed her a note. Once the man was given the money, he fled the building.

On the back of the note, police found the name of Byron Johnson. After searching police records, officers learned Johnson matched the physical descriptors given by credit union employees.

He also matched the description of the robbery suspect at the Circle K station, located at 4405 East Third Street. The Circle K was robbed at approximately 1:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 19.

Investigators then learned Johnson was possibly driving a black 2011 Chevrolet Equinox. His vehicle was located at 9:20 a.m. on Wednesday, December 20, in the parking lot of Kinser Flats at 1610 North Kinser Pike.

Officers found Johnson inside the vehicle and he was detained without incident.

While being searched and handcuffed, officers found Johnson with a sock full of money.
Johnson was transported to the Bloomington Police Department for an interview. Once
the interview was complete, Byron Gregory Johnson was transported to the
Monroe County Jail and remanded for the following charges.
