Candle sparks mobile home fire

COLUMBUS — Columbus firefighters say a family of eight escaped a mobile home fire Wednesday morning that was sparked by an unattended candle.

Columbus Fire Department firefighters responded to the fire at 10:55 a.m. Wednesday on Rosewood Lane in Candlelight Village mobile home park.

Domanika Ramos, who lived in the home, told firefighters the fire started in her son’s bedroom, where a candle had been burning on a dresser.

Ramos and her seven children — from ages 2 to 9 — were in the kitchen making lunch when she smelled the odor of smoke. She told firefighters a Christmas candle had been left burning on top of a dresser in her oldest son’s room.

Fire investigators learned a plastic laundry tote was near the burning candle at the top of the dresser and caught fire.

Although there were smoke alarms in the home, they did not go off during the fire. The cause of the fire has been identified as accidental.
