Hillcrest Christian Church Women’s Auction raises nearly $5,000

BEDFORD – Hillcrest Christian Church Women’s Ministry hosted its annual auction this past weekend, and raised $4,960 from the auctioning of 169 items.

As the pews begin to fill, attendees can admire the auction items that include homemade goodies which are “the hottest items” according to Roxanne Oliver, a leader of the auction.

The auction items were donated by church members and included a wide variety of items. Many were made by those who donated them, others included items bought from retailers.

A large charcuterie board made of red maple wood and handcrafted by church member Steve Hart racked up the most money with its bids, raking in $215 dollars, but it seems trifling next to a bottle of homemade maple syrup that sold for $50 the same night.

Some of the other auction items included holiday home decor, homemade apple butter that sold for $45, persimmon pudding for $40, and containers of homemade caramels that sold for $30 apiece.

The women of Hillcrest Christian Church enjoy a snack at a small break during the auction.

The first item up for bid to start the friendly competition amongst the women was a beautiful, ceramic Christmas village set, which brought $60 and will certainly uplift any home for the holidays.

Hillcrest Christian Church located in Bedford, has been hosting this auction for 5 years, and happens annually around the same time in November, just before the Holidays kick into full swing. It ran from 6 p.m. until roughly 9:30 p.m. with 67 assigned bid numbers, suggesting a healthy amount of bidders.

Hillcrest Christian Church member Roxanne Oliver was in charge of the event, and she said that the auction is one of the church’s “most popular and biggest attended” events that stem from the women’s ministry. This auction not only raises money for their causes each year, but it also provides a time of fellowship for the women.

Hillcrest Christian Church has made updating and remodeling their facility one of their focuses for the last several years. The funds from this auction will help cover the costs associated with updating the church’s restrooms. As the church prioritizes updates to the facility, these restrooms will soon reflect a more modern construction to mirror the rest of the church’s improvements.

Improvements to the restrooms include replacing handmade stalls with updates to items such as the toilets. The raised funds will also allow the church to transform one of the restrooms into a unisex restroom with multiple stalls, allowing more members to use it at the same time.

Member Kathy Staley assists with the bidding process.

Roxanne Oliver said there’s no set start date for the remodeling yet, but once it begins it shouldn’t take more than a few weekends. Any unused proceeds from the restroom updates, since Roxanne explained that “more than enough” was raised in the auction, will be used in other ministry endeavors, classroom supplies, and any other charitable services in need.

“It’s a great time,” Roxanne said, “and we look forward to it every year.”
