Firefighters battle fire at Jasper Salvage

JASPER – Firefighters battled a fire at Jasper Salvage after a trailer with scrap metal and aftermarket truck accessories caught fire.

Central Dispatch was alerted to the blaze around 11:30 a.m.

Firefighters quickly arrived at the salvage yard at 610 South Clay Street to find employees pulling the blazing trailer away from nearby structures and equipment

Jasper Fire Department Chief Kenny Hochgesang said the open trailer had flames shooting up into the air, but the source of the fire was near the bottom of the scrap pile.

Firefighters doused the flames to allow a grappler to pull scrap from the top of the pile. Once that was done, firefighters were able to extinguish the fire.

For safety measures, Jasper Police Officers and Street Department crews closed Clay Street while firefighters battled the blaze. The road was reopened around 1:34 p.m.

A total of four fire engines and around 25 firefighters were on the scene.

No injuries were reported, and damages were limited to the trailer. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
