Indiana State Police investigate the death of an inmate

ANDERSON – On November 11, 2023, an Indiana State Police detective began conducting a death investigation after an inmate being held in the Madison County Jail died while incarcerated in the facility.

The investigation by the detective indicated that sometime Saturday morning, an 18-year-old female inmate, identified as Shellby L. Hall, was discovered unresponsive by correctional staff. 

Jail staff and responding medical personnel provided medical care to the individual, however, she was pronounced deceased. 

Per normal protocol, the Madison County Sheriff’s Department requested the assistance of the Indiana State Police to investigate the death. 

The investigation is ongoing.   

Toxicology results and an autopsy are pending although no foul play is suspected at this time.

The Indiana State Police is being assisted in this investigation by the Madison County Coroner’s Office.
