Woman injured during domestic fight, man detained

BEDFORD – A Heltonville man was arrested on Monday, October 30th after Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to a 911 call reporting a domestic fight at 4:52 a.m. at 6124 US 50 East at the Marathon Station.

When police arrived they found a female with a contusion on her left eye and around her left eye socket.

Jacob Mitchell

She told police she had been living with 29-year-old Jacob Mitchell for about two months and he had taken her phone earlier in the morning and refused to give it back. He then grabbed her by the hair and dragged her around the house throwing her on the ground. She was able to grab Mitchell’s phone and run out of the home at 7783 US 50 East. Mitchell followed her to the Marathon station. She told police the fight escalated and Mitchell demanded his phone back and she demanded her phone back. She then called 911.

The woman refused to sign a battery affidavit because she said it would just make her situation worse not only for her but her children.

Officers asked about her other injuries including bruising on her arms and legs and she told police they happened on Friday, October 29th when Mitchell struck her.

Police informed the woman on how to receive a protective order.

Mitchell told police he took the phone because he believed the female was having an affair. Officers gave the woman back her phone and then gave Mitchell his phone. Mitchell then got into his vehicle and attempted to leave. He was told to turn the vehicle off and remain at the scene.

Mitchell refused to tell police how the woman got injured.

Mitchell was detained on a charge of domestic battery.

He then demanded that the woman not return to the home they shared. The officer told Mitchell he would not order the woman to do that because according to Indiana law since they had lived together longer than three weeks the woman was entitled to return to the home.

He then threatened to “blow off her head” and again demanded the officer deliver his message to the woman.
