Man flees from a domestic situation, sideswipes a vehicle and is detained

EAST OOLITIC – On Sunday, September 10, at approximately 11:42 a.m. a female called Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department Central Dispatch to report a verbal altercation between a male and female at 44 Treslar Street in Bedford.

While deputies were en route to the address Lawrence County Dispatch notified officers that the male 36-year-old Michael Collins, of Bedford had left the property in a black GMC Acadia.

When police arrived at the home they spoke to a female who told police she had been in a verbal fight with Collins and he had left in their vehicle.

The female caller told police Collins was driving recklessly in the neighborhood. The caller said she went to the home on Treslar Street to pick up the female involved in the verbal dispute and that is when Collins who was driving the GMC and traveling at a high rate of speed almost struck the female’s father who had exited his vehicle. Collins sideswiped the caller’s vehicle while he fled the scene. Collins was last seen turning west on Oolitic Road.

The female involved in the dispute believed Collins was headed to his place of employment at the Water Treatment Facility on Vista Drive in Oolitic or his mother’s house on Rueter Lane in Springville. Police looked at both locations and could not locate Collins.

Collins was later detained on charges of leaving the scene of an accident and criminal recklessness.
