IWU’s Oppenheimer Panel discussion brings Bird, Subramanian, and Yuan to the table

MARION — Indiana Wesleyan University’s Lumen Research Institute will offer an on-campus screening of a previously recorded panel discussion titled, “J. Robert Oppenheimer: An Evolving Legacy” on Tuesday, November 7th at 7:00 p.m. in the Globe Theater at IWU.  The virtual conversation took place on Friday, October 6th, and will debut to the public with this event.

President of IWU, Dr. Jon Kulaga hosted the panel discussion with Dr. Warren Rogers, Blanchard Chair and Professor of Physics, serving as moderator. Panel members include Kai Bird, Narayan Subramanian, and Jada Yuan. Kai Bird is the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of American Prometheus and Director of the Leon Levy Center for Biography at the City University of New York. Narayan Subramanian is the Senior Advisor to the Secretary of the Department of Energy. Jada Yuan is a National Correspondent for The Washington Post and author of Unleashing Oppenheimer.

In the wake of the release of Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, the panel grapples with the ways Oppenheimer’s legacy evolved over time. Particular attention is paid to the decision made in December 2022 by US Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm to vacate the Atomic Energy Commission’s 1954 decision that stripped Oppenheimer of his security clearance.

Dr. Warren Rogers reflected on the panel discussion saying, “I was pleased and honored to work with Kai, Jada, and Narayan, and appreciate the opportunity to participate in such a rich conversation.” The four discussed in clear yet detailed terms concerning a tremendous historic and significant scientific matter. Dr. Jon Kulaga felt honored to host the event and affirmed, “This will be a special conversation to watch and rewatch in the years ahead.”

C-SPAN’s “America History TV” producer, John McArdle, accepted the invitation to air the conversation on C-SPAN. The panel discussion is tentatively scheduled to air the first week in December. For further details, please visit https://www.c-span.org/ahtv/.
