IDEM welcomes Izaak Walton League–Miller Chapter and Doyne’s Marine, Inc. into the Indiana Clean Marina Program

PORTAGE – The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) welcomed two marinas in Portage, Ind. to the Indiana Clean Marina program earlier today:

  • The Izaak Walton League of America, Miller Chapter (Izaak Walton LeagueMiller), located at 1250 Crisman Road; and
  • Doyne’s Marine, Inc. (Doyne’s Marine), located at 1340 Crisman Road.

The marinas were recognized for going above and beyond to protect our state’s inland and coastal waterways from pollutants that can be generated at marinas and in the course of recreational boating.

“Indiana has hundreds of lakes and thousands of registered boats. Hoosiers clearly love the fun that comes with boating,” said IDEM Assistant Commissioner Bob Lugar. “We are excited to recognize Izaak Walton LeagueMiller and Doyne’s Marine as Indiana Clean Marinas for their efforts to ensure we have fun without impacting water quality.”

The Clean Marina Program is voluntary and encourages marina operators and recreational boaters to protect water quality and habitats by engaging in environmentally sound operating and maintenance practices.

“Doyne’s Marine is delighted to achieve Clean Marina status. We worked hard to get here and will continue to work hard to keep our waterways clean and healthy. Being part of the Oasis Marinas team has made it even more important to be environmentally friendly in all that we do.” said Scott Praxl, General Manager. “The Clean Marina Program has been a great opportunity to work with state officials on issues that impact us locally.”

Both marinas worked hard to earn Clean Marina status:

IWL-Miller is the first Izaak Walton League chapter in Indiana to achieve Clean Marina status. The facility:

  • Encouraged all members with boat slips to take the Clean Boater pledge.
  • The program encouraged them to emphasize their education on boating best management practices.

Doyne’s Marine, Inc. is the first Clean Marina to offer boat maintenance. The facility:

  • Added educational signage and rules for boaters and contractors within the marina to reflect “clean marina” practices.
  • Implemented a schedule to clean and maintain impervious areas throughout the marina.
  • Provided patrons with cigarette disposal containers.

Izaak Walton LeagueMiller and Doyne’s Marine join eight other marinas in IDEM’s Clean Marina Program. They include:

  • Hammond Marina (Hammond)
  • Marina Shores at Dune Harbor (Portage)
  • Sammie L. Maletta Public Marina (Portage)
