Dog perishes in house fire on Vinegar Hill Road, home destroyed

BEDFORD – Firefighters responded to a house fire on Vinegar Hill Road Friday morning.

Firefighters from Shawswick Volunteer Fire Department arrived on the scene three minutes after Central Disptach received the 911 call reporting the fire in the 300 block of Vinegar Hill Road at 8:48 a.m.

Also responding to the scene were Marion Township and Oolitic Volunteer Fire Department and Lawrence County Fire Territory Ambulance Service.

According to Shawswick VFD Chief Bob Brown, when firefighters arrived the home was engulfed in flames with thick black smoke billowing from the residence.

“No one was home when the fire started, but the homeowners arrived shortly after and were able to rescue two cats from the burning home,” added Brown. “The family dog perished in the fire.”

Firefighters were able to get the blaze under control quickly.

“They had a good knockdown, but the fire had a real good head start on us before we arrived,” added Chief Brown.

According to Chief Brown, the homeowner recently had the power restored to the home.

Those living in the home included Micah Mills and his wife and son. The home is owned by Mill’s father.

Firefighters believed the fire started near the main electrical box.

“But there was so much damage we can not tell actually what happened,” Chief Brown added.
