Oct. 10 Indiana Historic Pathways Educational Workshop offered in Paoli

BEDFORD – There is a week left to register for the Indiana Historic Pathways workshop for teachers, interpreters, museum staff, or just members of the public interested in history.

The workshop is Tuesday, October 10 at the Orange County Community Center in Paoli. It will be a fascinating look at a variety of aspects of southern Indiana’s history; though entitled “Getting from Here to There” and focused on early transportation, it includes so much more.

David Ruckman reenacts the survey done by David Rector for the Indian Treaty Line.

The speakers are experts in their fields and include Surveyor David Ruckman who will talk about the Buffalo Trace and its path across the state.

A.J Ariens

A.J. Ariens from Indiana DNR will give a snapshot of Indiana in the 1800s from the notes from the first public land surveyors.

Noah Sandweiss

Noah Sandweiss, Indiana’s Cemetery Register Coordinator will talk about how a cemetery can be used as a teaching tool and what we can learn from cemeteries.

David Nord

Professor Emeritus David Nord will give a presentation on Southern Indiana Railroad History and explain the historical impact railroads had on towns.

Dan McGuckin

Forester Dan McGuckin will discuss the historic role of fire on Indiana’s landscape and how fire is still used today to manage wildlife and vegetation.

A final session will be on interactive activities that can be used to engage children in learning history. The activities will be from the educational

l boxes that were given to schools along the Buffalo Trace for 4th-grade classes. New activities and items are added to the boxes regularly. These boxes are also available from a library or museum to be checked out in each county. Both the workshop and the boxes were made possible by a grant from Indiana Humanities.“The boxes and activities have been very popular,” said Teena Ligman, project coordinator for the buffalo trace boxes, “so we continue to promote the boxes and are adding another two activities with the workshop.”  Ligman encourages people to register now to attend the workshop. At the workshop, new activities will be unveiled and new items for the boxes will be distributed. Every workshop participant will get a copy of the activity along with the interactive item that goes with it.

Registration information is online at https://www.usi.edu/hsi101. Use registration code HS1101-001 or by phone at 812-464-1989.

The workshop fee is $10 which includes lunch, handouts, and take-home items. Ligman said the workshop committee has some great door prizes and is excited about the lineup of speakers. “We think it will be an inspirational workshop, and get some real synergy going with everyone who comes. We hope to fill the room to capacity!”
