Members of Lawrence County 4-H Rabbit Club excel at State Fair

LAWRENCE CO. – Members of the Lawrence County 4-H Rabbit Club excel at the 2023 Indiana State Fair this year.

Brooklyn Peterson and Isabelle Barker represented the Lawrence County 4-H Rabbit Club during the 4-H Rabbit Show.  It is the largest rabbit show in the state. Peterson took Best of Breed and Best Opposite Sex with her Checkard Giants. She also received Best in Variety for her Blue Checkered Giant and Best in Variety for Black Checkered Giant. Peterson also won Best of Breed for her Thrianta.

Barker showed her Jersey Wooly rabbits and received second-place and two third-place ribbons. For her Rhinelander, she placed third.

Barker had her individual rabbit posters from the Lawrence County 4-H Fair was selected to compete at the state level. She received an exceptional blue merit ribbon.

Four members of the Lawrence County 4-H Rabbit Club represented the county at the 2023 State Rabbit Ambassador contest. The Rabbit Ambassador contest is a comprehensive evaluation of a 4-H member’s knowledge and skills in the area of rabbits. The evaluation is composed of 3 parts: showmanship, breed identification, and a written test. 

The contestants must win their age group at their county fair to move onto the state level.

This year there were 139 contestants from across the state participating. Representing Lawrence County in Senior Division was Heaven Cooper, in Intermediate Division Isabelle Barker, in the Junior Division, was Andrew McKnight, and in the Novice Division was Wyatt Williams.

During breed identification, each contestant must identify 10 rabbits listing their breed, their class, and showroom classification. This portion is worth 60 points.

The written test is worth 100 points. The 2 younger levels are given 25 questions and the older levels are given 50.

During the showmanship portion, the contestant demonstrates their ability to evaluate their rabbit according to American Rabbit Breeder Association standards.

The judge watches for their ability to maintain control of their rabbit while completing a head-to-tail evaluation. This portion is worth 100 points.
