Bluejackets win third straight game in three days, beating Washington 8-1

MITCHELL – Mitchell High School have won their third game in a row, beating Washington 8-1 on Thursday night.

This game marks the team’s fourth game played in four days, with the Bluejackets winning their previous two matchups against Eastern Greene and Crawford County heading into last night’s game against the Hatchets.

Mitchell struck first against Washington on Thursday, scoring in the first inning when Malaya Tanglao connected on a pitch, driving it to right field for a triple before an error by the Hatchets’ defense allowed her to score the first run of the game.

The Bluejackets success at the plate continued, as they added another seven runs to their total through four innings.

Emma Chastain singled in the second inning, allowing Karsyn Coleman to score. Emerie Russell knocked in two runs in the third on a double to right field, scoring Tanglao and Page Mullis. Their final two runs came in the fourth when Tanglao got her third hit of the game, a single which gave way for Caitlyn Mullis and Gracelynn Payton to cross home plate. Tanglao then stole second base during the next at bat before a double from Page Mullis brought her home for their eighth run.

Though Mitchell weren’t able to land a runner on base in the fifth or sixth innings, they were able to hang on to their lead thanks to strong performances from their defense, who did not commit an error on the night, as well as pitcher Caitlyn Mullis, who threw all seven innings for the Bluejackets, allowing five hits and just one run, striking out seven.

Mitchell finished with eight hits, with Tanglao as the team’s leading hitter on the evening with three. She finished a perfect 3-3 from the plate, driving in two runs in the game.

For the first time since last Sunday, the Bluejackets will get a few days of rest before their next game on Monday, when they’ll take on No. 5 ranked Bedford North-Lawrence (13-3).
