Public forum to discuss future of Oolitic Middle School planned for Tuesday, March 28

OOLITIC – A public forum will be hosted on Tuesday, March 28 for community members to gather and discuss their wishes for the future of Oolitic Middle School.

The forum will take place at 6 p.m. at the Masonic Lodge, 35 Hoosier Avenue, in Oolitic.

The event is being hosted by Craig Godsey, who ran for the District One seat on the North Lawrence Community Schools board in this past election. Godsey received 38% of the total vote, losing to Kirsten Collier, who received 42% of the total vote.

The NLCS board voted near the end of July in 2022 to keep the middle school portion of the Oolitic Campus open, following concerns expressed by members of the district’s administration regarding short staffing at the school and uneven opportunities between the corporation’s two middle schools.

The proposal, which received a split 3-3 vote from the board, would’ve sent all NLCS middle school students to Bedford Middle School, fully utilizing the Oolitic Campus building as an elementary school going forward.

According to enrollment data from the Indiana Department of Education, OMS had only five enrolled students at the time of their count in 2022, down 174 middle schoolers from the previous year’s count.
