Passerby saves man from burning vehicle

SULLIVAN – On Tuesday, at approximately 6:30 a.m. Sullivan County 911 dispatch received several calls reporting a vehicle crash near US 41 and Johnson Street in Sullivan.

Callers reported the vehicle had struck a tree, before bursting into flames. It was quickly determined that the driver was still inside the burning vehicle.

According to Sheriff Jason Bobbitt, a passerby, Darryn Bucklers, stopped and immediately pulled the driver from the vehicle.

The driver was identified as 20-year-old Josiah Terry, of Shelburn. He was transported to Terre Haute Regional Hospital for his injuries.

Sullivan County Sheriff‘s Lieutenant Bill Snead investigated the crash and believes the driver had fallen asleep before leaving the roadway and colliding with the tree.

Assisting units were Sullivan City Fire, and Sullivan City Medic 1.

No charges were filed as a result of the accident.
