Homeowners’ quick action slows the spread of house fire

MITCHELL – A 9:27 p.m. Monday, firefighters from Marion Township and Huron Volunteer Fire Department responded to a house fire at 1898 Blue Spring Cavern Road.

When firefighters arrived on the scene they found the fire was confined to one room.

Firefighters used two attack lines and firefighters made entry into the structure to extinguish the blaze.

“The homeowner did an excellent job after discovering the fire,” said Chief Paul Gillespie. “She shut the door, cutting down the oxygen supply and controlling the flow path of air to the fire. This kept the damage to a minimum.”

According to Chief Gillespie, the back of the home suffered significant damage. There was also smoke, heat, and water damage throughout the structure.

Marion VFD responded with three apparatus and 14 personnel and Huron responded with tanker support.

Firefighters had the fire under control at 9:57 p.m. and units remained on the scene until 11:30 p.m. performing salvage and overhaul on the structure to make sure the fire did not rekindle.
