Construction of new Bedford police station remains on schedule

BEDFORD – Construction of the new Bedford Police Department station, located at 2308 16th St., is moving right along, according to Bedford mayor Sam Craig in Monday’s meeting of the Bedford Redevelopment Commission.

Craig said the masonry work on the front of the building should be completed this week, with work on the inside of the building being done currently as well.

“I was by Saturday and they were working on the stuff out front and finishing it up. At the update meeting the other day they were anticipating that most of the masonry work and stuff would be done by the end of the week, which it appears that they’ve completed. They’re moving along on the inside of the building, getting a lot done,” said Craig.

BPD chief Terry Moore said crews felt they were more than 50% finished with the project to this point.

Moore noted that the only concern at this point is a potential delay in receiving their air conditioning units, which could threaten to hold up the completion of the project. As of last week, Moore said delivery of the units was on track, but now the risers that hold the unit have been delayed.

“They said the last meeting they were running on time. Well, they thought they were but now they’re talking about the risers. Those risers have been put off and I guess that’s what holds the air conditioning unit. So that’s the biggest concern right now,” Moore said.

Craig said that if the risers continue to be delayed, the city could look into the possibility of looking elsewhere to have them made.

As of now, Moore said the project is still on schedule to be completed in time for the office to open in the fall of 2023.

During Monday’s meeting, the commission approved a bid from ECS to provide furniture for the station’s dispatch room. The bid, priced at $82,500, was the lowest response received by the city. Additionally, Moore said the same furniture set up from this company is used in Daviess County’s dispatch room, which he was able to check out before recommending the commission approve their bid.
