DNR works to clean up abandoned mines

INDIANA – The Department of Natural Resource Division of Reclamation is receiving up to $385 million in federal funds over the next 15 years to reclaim former coal mines.

Since 1982, more than 2,000 reclamation projects have been completed returning unregulated surface mines to beneficial end uses.

Hoosiers owning mining land abandoned prior to 1977 can report it to DNR for consideration by calling 1-800-772-MINE (6463), 812-665-2207, or emailing abandonedminesrestoration@dnr.IN.gov.

This video shows how DOR enhanced water quality and wildlife habitat at Sugar Ridge Fish & Wildlife Area’s formerly surface-mined land.
