BEDFORD – An Oolitic man was arrested on a warrant on Tuesday after he was stopped by a Bedford Police officer for an obstruction license plate in the parking lot of Circle K at 16th and H streets on February 9, 2021.
Police questioned to the driver 28-year-old Nichols Atkins and his male passenger if there was anything illegal in the vehicle.
Both replied there was nothing illegal in the vehicle. However, Atkins refused to allow police to search the vehicle.
Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department K-9 Dusty alerted officers of possible drugs in the vehicle.
An officer found a syringe in Atkins’ jean pocket. Officers also uncovered another syringe in the center console of the vehicle.
The passenger was released from the scene. Atkins was transported to the Bedford Police Department.
Atkins was released and the information was forwarded to the Lawrence County Prosecutor’s Office. A warrant was issued for Atkins’ arrest on charges of possession of heroin, unlawful possession of a syringe, and driving while his driver’s license was suspended.
