October 3 Walk Features Historic French Lick – West Baden

(BEDFORD) –  The Bedford Hiking Club is again sponsoring a walk in French Lick on Saturday, October 3.

Registration for this popular volkswalk is in the RV Lot across from the Historic Scenic Railroad Depot on Monon Street.  Registration will be from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. (EDT).  Walkers must complete the walk by 3 p.m.

The walk winds through the most historic parts of both French Lick and West Baden and includes great views of both hotels and the historic buildings in the two towns. Walkers will be given directions for an 11K (6.6 mile) or a 5K (3.1 mile) walk.

Walking is free however if you wish to walk for credit there is a $3 fee. There are also Indiana Historic Pathways patches available for sale.

The walk is sponsored by the Bedford Hiking Club and Indiana Historic Pathways.

It is called a Volkswalk which is German for People’s Walk. The International Volkswalk Association has walks on almost every continent so this is part of a network of walks that people can do for free or for credit. Credit is a stamp in a volkswalk book that keeps track of all the volkswalks a person completes for a later award.

People can come and just walk for the joy of walking, but anyone who thinks they might be interested in learning more about volkswalking is welcome to come learn more about this popular sport.

In general, it might take a person 2.5-3 hours to complete the 11K volkswalk. People walk at their own pace and are encouraged to stop at shops or explore points of interest along the way. It is not a timed event. Dogs are welcome but should be on a leash. Masks are required for registration.

For information on the volkswalk, contact Teena Ligman at 812-278-0139 or by email at tdligman@att.net.  For additional information on the area and driving directions see www.frenchlick.com.

The Bedford Hiking Club also sponsors two nearby year-round walks. Spring Mill State Park in Mitchell, has a beautiful walk voted in the past as one of the top ten volkswalks.  The second walk is the Limestone Walk in Bedford.  Bedford Hiking Club Website:  www.bedfordhikingclub.com
