BNL Prom Canceled, Graduation Plans Being Modified

(BEDFORD) – North Lawrence Community Schools has announced that the prom scheduled for Bedford North Lawrence High School students has been canceled.

Below is a statement from school officials.

Dear BNL Students and Parents,

Due to the pandemic, Bedford North Lawrence will have to cancel the 2020 Prom. We held out on canceling for as long as we could, knowing that Prom is a significant event in our students’ lives, and we wanted to do everything we could to preserve the tradition. Unfortunately, we do not see how this can be accomplished in the current state of the pandemic.

NLCS is working with the Lawrence County Health Dept. and making modifications to our graduation plan as needed. At this time NLCS is still planning to have our graduation on Friday, July 24th at 7:30 p.m. Additional information will be updated on the NLCS website by Monday, July 20th at 3:00 p.m.

At last night’s school board meeting school board members acknowledged the concerns of parents both for having and not having the prom or graduation.

The board also acknowledged the expense of prom and logistics involved for both events. When many school corporations canceled their events the board stated “we wanted to try and have this event for the seniors.”

“We are in trouble if we do and if we do not,” said President Trent Todd.

This came after Donna Garber asked the board about the prom. “A lot of students do not have the money; it is expensive and they work two or three jobs purchasing the gowns and tuxedos,” said Garber.

“We just want to know as soon as possible,” Garber concluded.

School officials met in executive session following the school board meeting Thursday night in order to make this decision.
