Trial Run Scheduled For Kirkwood Avenue As Pedestrian And Outdoor Dining Space

(BLOOMINGTON) – The City of Bloomington announces the trial closure of Kirkwood Avenue between Indiana and Grant Streets to vehicular traffic from Friday afternoon, June 19, through Sunday evening, June 21.

Sidewalks between Indiana and Grant Streets will be closed to pedestrian traffic, allowing restaurants to expand their seating to sidewalks and to provide patrons with a safe distance during their meals.

Users of the space should continue to maintain appropriate physical distancing while enjoying the Kirkwood streetscape.

Pedestrian traffic will be allowed directly on Kirkwood during the trial closure. Cross streets Indiana, Dunn, and Grant will remain open to vehicular traffic.

Restaurants now may operate at 75% capacity with social distancing requirements in Stage 4 of Governor Holcomb’s reopening plan.

The Kirkwood closure is one of many COVID-19 recovery initiatives supported by the City of Bloomington. The City’s Rapid Response Fund loan program has funded over $1.3 million dollars in small business loans to date and is currently set to expire on July 3 as required by the Governor’s executive order. The City’s final round of applications to the RRF fund is due by Monday, June 22 at 5 p.m. Businesses can apply at bloomington.in.gov/business.
