UPDATED: Firefighters Battling Large Field Fire on South I Street

(BEDFORD) – Firefighters from Shawswick, Marion and Bedford Fire Departments and the US Forest Service are battling a large field fire in the 2700 block of South I Street.

A firefighter from Bedford Fire Department reported the fire after seeing a large plume of smoke around 3:40 p.m. while at Jackson’s Mini Mart on Mitchell Road.

Winds and dry conditions are causing the fire to spread quickly.

Lawrence County Emergency Management and Tabernacle of Praise Emergency Service is also on the scene to assist.

At this time, it is unclear what started this fire.

A burn ban remains in effect in Lawrence County.

Since Thursday fires have started after reports of illegal burning.

Pleasant Run VFD responded to a field fire on US 50 Saturday. The fire burned almost two acres.

According to Shawswick Fire Chief Bobby Browns fines of $2,500 can be levied against those who don’t heed the burn ban.
