Martin County Commissioners Troubled With Bridge Repairs

(SHOALS) – The Martin County commissioners learn the costs of repairing Brooks Bridge, built in 1894, would be around $800,000.

Now they are trying to find the funds to repair the historic bridge. The cost will increase because of the historical significance and the added Army Corps of Engineers.
Martin County applied for Community Crossing Grants to repair three bridges, not including the Brooks Bridge, but all three were turned down. INDOT representatives told Martin County officials they are not funding bridge repairs.
With other needed repairs on bridges, more traveled in Martin County the commissioners are faced with repairing the Brooks Bridge, closing it or using existing funds to repair more heavily traveled bridges.
A 2013 traffic count showed only 107 drivers per day using the Brooks Bridge.
