Prevention works: Pet Friendly Services releases Q3 impact report

INDIANAPOLIS — Pet Friendly Services of Indiana has released its third-quarter impact report, highlighting 8,964 spay/neuter surgeries supported so far in 2026 at an average cost of $76 per surgery.

As Indiana’s only statewide nonprofit focused on ending pet overpopulation through accessible spay/neuter, Pet Friendly Services helps families afford care and funds surgeries for shelters, rescues, and community cat programs. These efforts address pet overpopulation at its source, preventing unwanted litters and reducing future pressure on animal welfare organizations.

“Shelters and rescues are working around the clock to help the animals already in their care. Our desire is to help pet owners access spay/neuter so we can prevent the next wave of animals from entering shelters,” said Cheri Storms, Executive Director of Pet Friendly Services. “That means making spay/neuter affordable, helping families overcome transportation barriers and training more veterinarians.”

The report highlights several efforts to make spay/neuter more accessible:

  • Removing transportation and cost barriers: A new $10,000 Transport Assist Pilot Program with Pets Alive in Bloomington will help up to 400 cats and dogs across five south-central Indiana counties receive affordable surgery. Eight participating animal welfare organizations will coordinate transportation and distribute financial assistance.
  • Building veterinary capacity: In partnership with United Spay Alliance, Pet Friendly Services hosted three hands-on spay/neuter training sessions in 2026. These sessions help veterinarians build the surgical skills, confidence, and efficiency needed to perform more surgeries.
  • Bringing spay/neuter to local communities: Public Vet’s mobile clinics have provided spay/neuter surgeries for 8,117 cats so far in 2026. Pet Friendly Services of Indiana provides financial assistance to ensure every pet owner and community cat caretaker can afford to get their cats fixed.
  • Helping shelters, rescues, and community cat programs: Grant funding from Pet Friendly Services provides free and discounted spay/neuter, making animals adoption-ready and stabilizing community cat colonies.

Together, these programs help animals already in need while spaying and neutering to address the root cause of overpopulation.
