CRAWFORDSVILLE – Indiana Governor Mike Braun announced today that Nucor Corporation, the largest U.S.-based steel producer, has announced plans to expand its Towers & Structures manufacturing operations in Crawfordsville, creating up to 100 new jobs by the end of 2029.

“This is a significant win for Indiana and, most importantly, for Hoosiers, as Nucor’s continued commitment to the state will create another 100 high-paying career opportunities,” said Gov. Braun. “Nucor’s expansion in Indiana will add to our state’s robust advanced manufacturing sector, putting Hoosiers at the center of delivering high-quality, durable and safe products worldwide.”

Nucor will invest $105 million to expand its existing Towers & Structures facility in Montgomery County, which began production in 2025. The company will expand its existing footprint by adding an additional 125,000 square feet under roof on its approximately 180-acre site, leveraging the same automation, efficient straight-line production and advanced hot-dip galvanizing operations as its original operation. The expansion will allow Nucor to increase production of engineered utility structures that support the country’s electrification initiatives, such as grid hardening, renewable energy projects, and building a nationwide network of EV charging stations.
Nucor expects to break ground on the expansion in the first quarter of 2027 and begin hiring for new positions mid-2027, adding to its team of 328 Hoosiers. New positions are expected to offer average salaries nearly 150% of the Montgomery County average.

“The expansion of our Towers & Structures production facility in Indiana will help us meet strong demand for utility poles and other infrastructure resulting from significant investments by our electric utility customers to modernize the grid and expand generation to meet our nation’s growing power needs,” said Leon Topalian, chair and chief executive officer of Nucor Corporation. “We appreciate the support we have received from state and local officials in Indiana, including Governor Braun, the Indiana Office of Commerce, the Indiana Economic Development Corporation and the Montgomery County Council and Board of Commissioners, and we are excited to grow our operations in Indiana.”
The project marks Nucor’s fifth major investment in Indiana in recent years, totaling $597.5 million. In addition to its initial $115 million Towers & Structures facility investment announced in 2023, the company added a $290 million modernization investment at its sheet mill operations in Crawfordsville in 2022, invested $28.5 million to build an insulated metal panel production facility in Waterloo next to its existing Nucor Building Systems Indiana campus, and announced a $59 million investment in its Vulcraft division in St. Joe in August. Together, along with today’s announcement, these expansions account for 400 new Hoosier jobs.

“Nucor’s strong presence in Indiana provides more than 2,600 – and growing – Hoosier jobs while powering Indiana manufacturing and community growth,” said Indiana Secretary of Commerce Chuck Goodrich. “The company’s decision to continue investing and growing in Indiana is a testament to the skill of our Hoosier workforce and the strength of our state’s business climate.”
Launched in 1989, Nucor Steel Indiana was Nucor’s first sheet steel mill, and its Towers & Structures business unit was formed in 2022. Nucor employs more than 2,600 teammates at more than a dozen locations in Indiana. The company’s Crawfordsville expansion is subject to the finalization of local incentives being considered by Montgomery County.
