ORLEANS — A boil water order has been issued until further notice for Town of Orleans water customers residing on and along West Hawthorne Drive.
Town officials recommend that affected residents bring all tap water intended for consumption to a rolling boil for at least five minutes before use.
Boil orders are typically declared as a precautionary safety measure following disruptions in the water distribution system, such as water main breaks, depressurization, or scheduled system maintenance, which can allow bacteria or contaminants to enter the lines.
Safety Guidelines for Impacted Residents
During an active boil order, health officials advise taking the following precautions:
- Drinking & Cooking: Use boiled or bottled water for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth, and preparing food or baby formula.
- Boiling Instructions: Bring tap water to a vigorous, rolling boil for five full minutes. Allow the water to cool completely before using or transferring it to clean, covered storage containers.
- Dishwashing & Cleaning: Wash dishes using boiled water or a bleach-sanitizing rinse. Avoid using home dishwashers unless they feature a high-temperature sanitizing cycle.
- Bathing & Hygiene: Tap water may still be used for showering, bathing, and laundry, provided no water is ingested. Adults should monitor young children closely during baths to ensure they do not swallow water.
Lifting the Order
The advisory will remain in effect until the municipal water utility completes necessary repairs, flushes the distribution system, and collects required water quality samples. State regulations mandate that water samples pass testing—confirming the absence of harmful bacteria—before the order can be officially lifted.
