U.S. diesel prices hit all-time record high of $5.85 per gallon; Fueling new inflation fears

INDIANA — The national average price of diesel fuel has reached an all-time record high of $5.85 per gallon, surpassing the previous record of $5.82 per gallon set in June 2022, according to data released Friday by GasBuddy.

The surge represents a dramatic price increase over the past 12 months. In September 2025, national diesel prices averaged just $3.70 per gallon—meaning commercial drivers and businesses are now paying more than $2.00 per gallon more than they were one year ago.

While fluctuating gasoline prices often dominate consumer news, petroleum experts warn that rising diesel costs pose a far broader threat to the overall U.S. economy. Diesel powers the backbone of supply chains, including long-haul freight trucks, cargo trains, agricultural machinery, and heavy construction equipment.

As transportation and operational overhead escalate, businesses are forced to pass those costs directly to consumers.

Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.

“Diesel is the fuel that moves the economy, and when diesel prices reach record levels, the impact extends far beyond the transportation sector,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “Higher diesel prices impact consumers as rising supply chain costs increase the price of groceries, household goods, deliveries, and countless other products Americans rely on every day.”

Historical Price Comparison

Energy analysts attribute the sharp rise to global market volatility, ongoing geopolitical tensions, tight global fuel inventories, and reduced international refining capacity.

Consumer and Commercial Relief Tools

With fuel price volatility continuing to affect both commercial fleets and everyday drivers, analysts recommend using price-comparison platforms to track local station rates.

GasBuddy noted that over 515,000 unique users reported fuel prices on its platform in August 2026 alone, contributing to real-time price tracking across North America. To offset rising expenditures, drivers utilizing the company’s Pay with GasBuddy+™ membership program reported savings of up to 33¢ per gallon on activated deals, with top users saving upwards of $80 at the pump during August.
