INDIANA — Central Indiana residents should prepare for a late-summer heatwave, with temperatures expected to surge into the high 90s Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, according to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis. Combined with high humidity, heat index values across the region could feel like more than 100 degrees during peak afternoon hours.
The mid-week spike comes as a stark contrast to typical late-August and early-September weather. The normal average high temperature in central Indiana for this week is roughly 82 degrees.
Meteorologists attribute the unseasonably warm spell to a strong high-pressure ridge pushing hot, humid air up from the south. The conditions could prompt heat advisories across the state before a cold front gradually moves in over the weekend, bringing potential relief and thunderstorm chances by Labor Day.
Health and weather officials urge residents to take precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses, such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke:
- Clothing: Wear lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing to help the body cool naturally.
- Activity: Limit strenuous outdoor activities and heavy labor to the cooler early morning or late evening hours.
