GREENSBURG — A devastating house fire left two people dead in rural Decatur County early Sunday morning.
According to the Decatur County Sheriff’s Department, emergency dispatchers received a call reporting a structure fire around 12:30 a.m. in the 5700 block of South County Road 1000 West, located near County Road 600 South. When first responders arrived on the scene, they found the home fully engulfed in flames.
While battling the blaze, firefighters located two individuals inside the residence. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet released their names or ages as the Decatur County Coroner’s Office works to confirm their identities and notify next of kin.
Crews worked for roughly an hour and a half to knock down the flames, bringing the fire under control at approximately 2:00 a.m.
“The responding firefighters did an outstanding job, getting the fire contained at approximately 2:00 a.m.,” said Decatur County Sheriff Bill Meyerrose.

Assisting Agencies: Decatur County Sheriff’s Department, Decatur County Communications, Decatur County EMS, Decatur County Coroner’s Office, the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office, Decatur County REMC, and the Decatur County Crisis Intervention Team.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by local officials and the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office.
