WASHINGTON, D.C.— A majority of American workers are leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) on the job, with most reporting that the technology saves them measurable time during their workweek.
According to new findings from the U.S. Census Bureau’s March 2026 Household Trends and Outlook Pulse Survey (HTOPS), approximately 55% of U.S. workers reported using AI for at least one of 11 specified workplace tasks.
The bi-monthly experimental survey defines AI as computational systems capable of performing tasks traditionally requiring human intelligence—such as learning, reasoning, problem-solving, perception, and decision-making. Survey respondents were given examples of AI applications including machine learning, natural language processing, virtual agents, and voice recognition systems.
How AI Saves Time in the Workplace
For workers who actively utilized AI tools in the previous week, the productivity gains were notable:
- 1 to 2 Hours Saved: 31% of AI users reported saving one to two hours of work time.
- Less than 1 Hour Saved: 25% reported saving under an hour.
- 3 to 4 Hours Saved: 15% estimated saving three to four hours.
- 4+ Hours Saved: 15% saved more than four hours of labor.
- No Time Saved / Extra Time: 10% reported no time savings, while 3% indicated using AI required additional time to complete their work.
Overall, 24% of workers who used AI on the job reported using the technology daily, while 46% used it at least one day per week.
Top 5 Ways Americans Are Using AI at Work
The survey identified the most common workplace applications for AI technology:
- Information & Technical Help (37%): Searching for data or troubleshooting technical issues.
- Writing & Documentation (32%): Drafting communications, documentation, or instructions.
- Idea Generation (32%): Brainstorming and developing creative concepts.
- Information Synthesis (31%): Interpreting, translating, or summarizing text and data.
- Administrative Tasks (27%): Streamlining routine administrative duties.
Fewer employees reported using AI for specialized tasks such as computer coding, predictive modeling, customer support management, or supply chain logistics.
Demographic and Industry Insights
The Census Bureau data highlighted notable demographic variations in workplace AI adoption:
- Education: Workers with a bachelor’s degree or higher reported the highest weekly usage rates (75%), compared to 62% of those with some college education and 59% of high school graduates.
- Gender: Male workers were more likely to use AI daily (30%) compared to female workers (17%). Men also reported higher utilization rates for search assistance (42% vs. 31%) and information translation (34% vs. 28%).
- Age: Younger employees (ages 18 to 49) were more likely than older workers (50+) to use AI for tasks like writing and drafting instructions.
Parallel business data from the Census Bureau indicates that enterprise AI adoption also grew significantly between December 2025 and May 2026, with large businesses employing 20 or more workers leading the trend across multiple commercial sectors.
