BEDFORD — Firefighters responded to a heavy structure fire early Sunday morning causing significant damage to a building on Shawnee Lane and displaced several residents.
Emergency crews were dispatched to 212 Shawnee Lane at approximately 5:34 a.m. following reports of a confirmed structure fire. Within three minutes, units from Engine 3 arrived on the scene at 5:37 a.m., reporting heavy smoke and active flames shooting from the south end of the building.
According to Bedford Fire Chief Luke Pinnick, due to the intensity of the blaze, additional firefighter crews were called in to assist with containment efforts and search-and-extinguishment operations.
Firefighters worked for several hours to fully extinguish the fire and overhaul the scene, remaining on site until approximately 10:41 a.m., said Chief Pinnick.
No injuries to residents or emergency personnel were reported.
The American Red Cross was called to the scene to provide immediate emergency assistance, emergency shelter, and support to the families displaced by the fire.
The cause of the blaze remains under investigation. Investigators from the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office were called in to assist local fire authorities in determining where and how the fire originated.
