INDIANAPOLIS — A violent altercation between two food vendor employees at the Indiana State Fairgrounds late Saturday night ended with one worker seriously injured and the suspect arrested early Sunday morning following a SWAT standoff.
Indiana State Troopers assigned to the Indiana State Fair responded at approximately 10:22 p.m. on Saturday, August 8, to a report of a criminal incident at a food vendor booth near the Indiana Farmers Coliseum.
Upon arrival, troopers located a 20-year-old victim suffering from severe slash wounds caused by a knife or other sharp object. State troopers immediately rendered emergency first aid until on-site EMS personnel took over care. The victim was subsequently transported to an Indianapolis area hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
Investigators identified the suspect as 37-year-old Steven T. Mimms of Indianapolis. Detectives determined that both Mimms and the victim were employees of a third-party food vendor operating at the state fair.
Mimms fled the scene and exited the fairgrounds before law enforcement officers arrived at the booth.
Early Sunday morning, investigators tracked Mimms to a home in the 500 block of North Beville Avenue in Indianapolis. Members of the Indiana State Police SWAT Team assisted at the scene and located Mimms hiding inside the attic of the residence.
Following initial resistance, officers took Mimms into custody shortly after 8:00 a.m.
Mimms was evaluated at an area hospital before being processed for transport to the Marion County Justice Center.
He was arrested on preliminary charges including attempted murder, escape, and resisting arrest.
The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will make final charging decisions as the Indiana State Police continues its active investigation into the incident.
