MARTINSVILLE — A Martinsville High School student-athlete is recovering at home after being airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital following an injury during the school’s annual Red-Blue Scrimmage on Friday evening, August 7.
In an update released Saturday, the Metropolitan School District (MSD) of Martinsville confirmed that after communicating with the player’s family, the athlete has been discharged and is “resting comfortably”.
According to Morgan County EMS, emergency personnel evaluated the football player on-site shortly after the injury occurred during the scrimmage. Given the nature of the emergency, first responders coordinated with the IU Health LifeLine flight team to transport the athlete by medical helicopter to a specialty care facility in Indianapolis.
School officials and emergency medical personnel have not publicly disclosed the exact nature or extent of the injuries sustained.
Both school administrators and emergency service agencies commended coaches, teachers, and student-athletes for their swift and orderly response, which allowed medics to manage the field emergency efficiently.
“If we asked for help and information, it was quickly provided,” Morgan County EMS shared in a statement. “The student athletes were respectful to our processes and gave us our space to move around the building. We often mention our public safety partners, but these dedicated teachers, administrators and coaches are indispensable when emergencies arise at the schools. Amazing job!”
In a public statement released Saturday, MSD of Martinsville leadership expressed gratitude to the multi-agency emergency team—including the City of Martinsville Police, MSD Police, Martinsville Fire Department, Morgan County Emergency Management, and Morgan County 911 dispatchers—for their quick and professional response.
In a statement released Saturday morning, Martinsville Schools indicated that, as of Saturday, the student-athlete who was injured during the scrimmage was “home resting comfortably” with family.
“During the annual Red-Blue Scrimmage at Martinsville High School on August 7, 2026, a student-athlete was injured and transported for medical attention,” school officials wrote in a prepared statement. “Thank you to the Martinsville High School leadership team, staff and coaches, MSD of Martinsville Police, City of Martinsville Police, Morgan County Emergency Management, Martinsville Fire Department, Morgan County 911 Center and Martinsville High School student-athletes for their quick and appropriate response to this incident. The professionalism, preparedness and immediate action of all individuals involved are appreciated.
“The District staff and students’ thoughts and support remain with the student-athlete and their family, and the continued backing from the Martinsville community is appreciated. After communication with the family on August 8, 2026, it was shared that the student-athlete is home resting comfortably.”
District leaders added that thoughts and support from across the Martinsville community remain with the student-athlete and their family as recovery continues at home.
