BLOOMINGTON — Local sweet corn has officially reached its seasonal peak, and the Bloomington Community Farmers’ Market (BCFM) is inviting community members to celebrate the harvest this Saturday with a packed morning of fresh produce, live entertainment, and local community outreach.
The market is open from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at 401 North Morton Street at Showers Commons.
Thanks to ideal growing conditions this summer—marked by warm sunny days and timely rainfall—local growers are reporting an abundant yield of white, yellow, and bi-color sweet corn. Market organizers emphasize that field-to-market speed makes all the difference in taste, as locally harvested ears retain natural sugars that often degrade during long-distance transit to grocery stores.
In addition to the seasonal produce, visitors to Fernandez Plaza and the Market grounds can look forward to several special events this weekend:
Musical Performance by Emma Richards
Indianapolis-based singer-songwriter Emma Richards returns to the Farmers’ Market Circular Stage this Saturday. With over five years of local performance experience, Richards will perform two sets—at 8:30 a.m. and 10:15 a.m.—featuring a mix of original music and covers of Grammy-winning hits.
For those who miss Saturday’s show, Richards will also deliver an encore performance at the Tuesday Market on August 4, starting at 5:00 p.m. at Hopewell Commons (630 S. Morton St.).
36th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act
The Council for Community Accessibility is hosting an ADA Commemoration and Resource Fair from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Fernandez Plaza outside City Hall (401 N. Morton St.).
The event honors the 36th anniversary of the landmark civil rights legislation and will feature informational booths, accessibility resource displays, interactive games, prizes, and complimentary cookies. In the event of rain, activities will move inside to the City Hall Atrium.
Mayor’s Team at the Table
As part of the city’s ongoing public engagement initiative, City of Bloomington Communications Director Desiree DeMolina will be available at the Market from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Residents are encouraged to stop by to ask questions, share feedback, and learn more about local government programs.
Local naturalists will also be on-site on the first and third Saturdays of the month. Visitors of all ages can drop by to ask questions about native ecology, examine local fauna, or learn more about private natural resource programming led by the city.
