WEST BADEN SPRINGS — Historic preservation organization Indiana Landmarks is inviting visitors to go beyond the legendary 200-foot domed atrium at the historic West Baden Springs Hotel. On select Thursday afternoons, tourgoers can experience a specialized, two-hour behind-the-scenes tour with rare access to operational spaces and luxury suites normally closed to the public.

Built in 1902 and once dubbed the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” the West Baden Springs Hotel became famous for its massive free-span dome and lavish mineral spring spa amenities. While standard guided walking tours cover the grand public areas, the specialized behind-the-scenes experience delves into the hidden infrastructure that kept the resort running during its Gilded Age heyday.
Uncovering Forgotten Operations & Modern Transformations
The two-hour guided walk traces the evolution of spaces that served the hotel’s earliest guests, providing insight into both historic daily operations and modern adaptation:
- Historic Service Hubs: Guests explore original utilitarian areas, including the former hotel kitchen, garage, ice cream plant, commercial laundry, printing office, and water filtering plant.
- Modern Luxury Accommodations: The tour highlights current high-end amenities, including an inside look at Table One (the hotel’s private dining space), historic ballroom suites, and Gilded Age-styled guest rooms.
- The Presidential Suite & Balconies: Attendees visit the sixth-floor Presidential Suite, where they can step onto the balcony for an iconic, elevated view overlooking the grand atrium.
