INDIANA – Consumers are being advised to check their pantries after California-based food company Amy’s Kitchen initiated a voluntary recall of more than 184,000 cans of its popular canned soup due to a packaging defect that could cause the product to spoil prematurely.
The recall impacts 15,350 cases—totaling 184,200 individual 14.5-ounce cans—of Amy’s Organic Lentil Soup – Light in Sodium. The affected products were distributed nationwide to major grocery chains, including Walmart, Kroger, and Albertsons, as well as retailers across 27 U.S. states and parts of Canada.
According to a representative for Amy’s Kitchen, the voluntary recall was prompted by a manufacturing flaw identified on the can’s easy-open pull tab.
“The defect could cause the product to spoil, and the decision was made out of an abundance of caution to ensure the quality and safety of our products,” an Amy’s Kitchen spokesperson said in a statement.
On July 14, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) formally classified the event as a Class II recall. The agency defines a Class II recall as a situation where exposure to or consumption of a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, or where the probability of severe health consequences is remote.

What Consumers Should Do
This recall impacts no other Amy’s Kitchen products or soup varieties.
Shoppers who have purchased the affected lot of Amy’s Organic Lentil Soup – Light in Sodium are instructed not to consume it. Cans should be safely discarded or returned to the point of purchase for a full refund.
