Death under investigation at Mill Race Park Observation Tower

COLUMBUS— Authorities are investigating a fatal incident that occurred on Wednesday at one of Columbus’s most prominent municipal parks.

The Columbus Police Department (CPD) confirmed that emergency personnel were dispatched to Mill Race Park just before 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 24th, following reports of a critical incident at the park’s landmark observation tower. Upon arriving at the structure, responding officers located a deceased individual on the scene.

Following the discovery, Columbus authorities immediately closed Mill Race Park to the public to secure, protect the integrity of the scene, and allow detectives and forensic investigators to conduct an initial sweep.

While a formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death remains actively underway, law enforcement officials moved quickly to ease community anxieties. The Columbus Police Department stated that they do not believe there is any ongoing threat or danger to the general public stemming from the incident.

Once the initial on-scene investigation concluded later Wednesday, the emergency tape was removed, and Mill Race Park was officially reopened to visitors.

Mill Race Park, situated at the confluence of the Flatrock and East Fork White rivers in downtown Columbus, is one of the city’s most heavily trafficked recreational spaces. The park’s 84-foot-tall wooden and steel observation tower is a structural icon of the park, routinely drawing walkers and tourists looking for a panoramic view of the riverfront and the city’s architectural landscape.

Because of the high daytime traffic typically seen around the observation tower, investigators are looking to speak with anyone who may have been in the area early Wednesday afternoon.

The identity of the deceased individual has not yet been publicly released, pending formal identification and the notification of next of kin by the county coroner’s office.

Detectives are urging anyone who may have witnessed unusual activity near the observation tower before the 2:00 p.m. emergency response to come forward. If you have any information regarding the incident, please contact the Columbus Police Department directly at 812-376-2600.
