Seymour clips BNL 2-1 in sectional semifinal

BNL’s Karsyn Coleman allowed only six hits, but the Stars dropped a 2-1 decision to Seymour in the sectional semifinal at Jeffersonville on Tuesday night.

JEFFERSONVILLE – Seymour scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning to edge Bedford North Lawrence 2-1 in the Class 4A sectional semifinal on Tuesday night.

The Owls (15-10) advanced to face Floyd Central in the championship game on Thursday.

After BNL scored in the sixth to pull even, Emma Sweet walked, Maggie Calhoun dropped a sacrifice bunt, and Zoe Williams lined a two-out single to center for the game-winning run.

”It’s just a game where they got a few more hits than we did,” BNL coach Brad Gilbert said. “It doesn’t make us feel better, but they won the game. We didn’t give it to them. They just played a little better than we did.”

Seymour ace Taylor Stuckwisch allowed only two hits, and both came in the sixth as BNL’s Adalynn Bailey singled, Kali McKee bunted her to second, and Jaden Schofield came through with a two-out single to center.

The Owls, who rallied to clip BNL 7-5 during the regular-season meeting on May 12, scored in the third on a RBI single by Macie Rawls.

Stuckwisch struck out eight. Lainey Sandlin had three hits and Williams collected two for the Owls, who left eight runners on base.

”She threw pretty well, but so did our pitcher,” Gilbert said. “Karsyn (Coleman) pitched well, and our defense played well. We made them earn it. It was just a battle. It’s disappointing we lost, but I’m proud of the fight. It didn’t go the way we wanted, but we didn’t quit. We went down fighting.”

The Stars bowed out with an 8-20 record.
