WASHINGTON — Local law enforcement agencies are gearing up for a high-visibility enforcement campaign aimed at saving lives on Indiana roadways. The Washington Police Department and the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office have announced a partnership with the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI) for the national “Click It or Ticket” campaign.

Starting Monday, May 11, and continuing through May 31, 2026, motorists can expect to see an increased police presence. Officers will be working overtime specifically to ensure that all drivers and passengers are buckled up and that children are properly secured in appropriate car seats.
The mobilization is not limited to Daviess County. Other regional agencies, including the Vincennes Police Department and the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, are also participating in the blitz.
The primary goal of the campaign is to encourage safe driving habits during the heavy travel period surrounding Memorial Day. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which funds the overtime patrols, seat belts are the single most effective safety device in a vehicle, reducing the risk of fatal injury by 45% for front-seat occupants.
“Zero Excuses” Policy
Authorities emphasize that the enforcement will be strict and consistent across the region.
“Seat belts save lives, but they only work if you use them,” said local officials. “Our goal isn’t to write tickets; it’s to make sure everyone makes it home safely. However, during this window, we will have a zero-tolerance policy for those who choose not to buckle up.”
The enforcement period covers both daylight and nighttime hours, as statistics show that unrestrained fatalities are significantly higher at night.
