BEDFORD — A historic pocket of land near downtown Bedford is set for a major transformation into a modern, inclusive park and playground.
The city is partnering with the Bedford Urban Enterprise Association (BUEA), which owns the land located along J Street, just north of the downtown square. The BUEA also owns adjacent property to the north, providing ample space for a multi-use recreational area.
The location was the home of the Monon Depot. In 2020, the Monon Depot was placed on Indiana Landmarks’ 10 Most Endangered list of historic structures. In 2023, the vacant structure was damaged by fire beyond repair.

While planning is in the preliminary stages, Mayor Craig and the BUEA have clear priorities for the space. The vision includes:
- Inclusive Playgrounds: High-quality, accessible play apparatus designed for children of all abilities.
- Safe Surfaces: The use of “soft surface” flooring to ensure safety and comfort.
- Community Amenities: Dedicated picnic areas and convenient parking for families visiting the downtown area.
A key highlight of the proposal is the integration of the park with the city’s existing infrastructure. Plans call for a connector path linking the new park directly to the Milwaukee Trail.
The Milwaukee Trail, built on a former rail corridor, is a popular destination for local hikers and cyclists. By creating this link, the city hopes to enhance the “walkability” of Bedford, allowing residents to travel seamlessly from the trail into the heart of downtown.
To ensure the project meets modern standards for urban recreation, Mayor Craig and BUEA members have been visiting successful municipal parks in other cities. These scouting trips will inform the work of the professional designers who will eventually create the specific blueprints for the J Street site.
While the enthusiasm for the project is high, the city is moving forward with a measured approach. A specific project timeline and total cost have not yet been determined; these figures will be finalized once the formal designs are completed.
