Student Power: IU Athletics expands Assembly Hall Student Section for 2026-27 Season

BLOOMINGTON Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall is about to get significantly louder for visiting teams. Indiana University Athletics announced a major shift in student seating for the 2026-27 men’s basketball season, effectively surrounding the court with the “heartbeat” of the university.

Starting next season, the IU student section will occupy both the north and south bleachers located directly behind the baskets.

Historically, while the south bleachers were a dedicated part of the student section, the north bleachers were reserved for general season ticket holders. This change marks a strategic move to prioritize student presence in some of the arena’s most influential viewing areas.

Scott Dolson, IU Vice President and Director of Athletics

“IU students are the heartbeat of this campus, and they are a huge part of what makes gamedays special at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall,” said Scott Dolson, IU Vice President and Director of Athletics. “This change recognizes and celebrates that by giving our students a huge percentage of the best seats in the house.”

Head Coach Darian DeVries

The move is being championed by head coach Darian DeVries, who is entering his second season leading the Hoosiers. DeVries led the team to an 18-14 record (9-11 in the Big Ten) during his inaugural year in Bloomington and is looking to leverage the home-court advantage.

“We are excited to continue making Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall the toughest road environment in all of college basketball,” DeVries said in a news release. “We appreciate all the support we have received from Hoosier Nation.”

Student Ticket Information

For students looking to secure their spot in the new layout:

  • Upgrades Available: Students who purchased the combined football and men’s basketball season ticket package will have the first option to upgrade.
  • Choice of View: Eligible students can choose between a ticket package featuring either the north or south bleachers.

By placing students behind both backboards, IU Athletics aims to create a wall of noise and distraction for opposing players during free throws and key possessions at both ends of the court.
