Orange County historical markers restored for America’s Semiquincentennial

PAOLI As Indiana prepares for America’s Semiquincentennial, a collaborative effort is underway in Orange County to ensure local history remains well-preserved. The Orange County America 250 Committee recently spearheaded a project to refurbish all three of the county’s state historical markers.

The Pivot Point marker in Paoli, which had fallen into disrepair, received a significant restoration this spring. The project was completed by advanced art students at Paoli High School under the guidance of instructor Chris Jones.

The restoration was a multifaceted effort. Students meticulously redid the marker’s lettering and finish. Committee member Alan Fidler assisted in replacing the original weathered wooden post with a durable, modern stainless steel version.

The Lost River Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.) served as a key partner in the project.

The Pivot Point marker, also referred to as the Initial Point, holds a unique place in state history. In 1805, U.S. Deputy Surveyor Ebenezer Buckingham began the initial survey of Indiana at this exact location.

Indiana was the first state in the nation to be completely laid out under this specific survey system. This foundational work established the legal descriptions of real estate that are still utilized across the state today. The marker was originally placed at the site by the Indiana Society of Pioneers in 1961.

The committee’s efforts extend to the northern part of the county as well:

  • Freeman’s Corner: Orange County America 250 is currently partnering with art students at Orleans Jr.-Sr. High School and instructor Dr. Leah Morgan to refurbish the Freeman’s Corner Marker.
  • Congress Square: The historical marker located in Historic Congress Square in Orleans has also received a “facelift” in preparation for the upcoming national celebrations.

The committee noted that these efforts are vital to maintaining the legacy of Orange County as the community looks toward the 250th anniversary of the United States.
