Alex Boyd named Head Boys Basketball Coach at Washington High School

WASHINGTON The Washington Community Schools Board of Trustees has officially named Alex Boyd as the new head coach of the Washington High School boys basketball program. A native son and former multi-sport standout for the Hatchets, Boyd returns to lead a program steeped in Indiana basketball lore.

Boyd steps into the role with a deep understanding of the Hatchets’ winning culture, having served as a varsity assistant coach during the 2025–2026 season. During that tenure, he was credited with modernizing the team’s approach to opponent scouting and film analysis, while also coordinating crucial team logistics.

Boyd is no stranger to the head coaching seat. From 2022 to 2025, he led the Washington Junior High School program to a dominant 50–15 record. His time at the junior high level was defined by a focus on accountability and academic monitoring, ensuring his athletes were prepared for the rigors of high school competition.

“Alex’s passion for Hatchet Basketball and his ability to relate to his players have been evident since he started coaching for us,” said Larry Cochren, Athletic Director at Washington Community Schools. “He has learned from the best in Coach Gene Miiller and Coach Brandt Schuckman. Alex will be able to keep the current staff in place and continue to help develop our student-athletes into young men.”

Legacy and Leadership

Washington High School carries one of the most prestigious reputations in Indiana high school basketball history. The Hatchets rank third in the state for the most IHSAA boys basketball state championships, boasting seven titles (1930, 1941, 1942, 2005, 2008, 2010, and 2011).

Boyd himself contributed to the school’s athletic tradition as a four-year athlete in both basketball and golf. His leadership extends off the court as well; he served as class president during his time as a student and recently earned a degree in Sports Management from the University of Southern Indiana (2025).
