Mitchell to celebrate 100th birthday of astronaut Gus Grissom

MITCHELL — The community is invited to honor the legacy of one of its most famous sons as the Gus Grissom Boyhood Home hosts a 100th birthday celebration for the late astronaut.

The event is scheduled for Friday, April 3, 2026, at 5:30 p.m. at the historic home located at 715 W. Grissom Ave. in Mitchell. Attendees can enjoy cupcakes and drinks as they gather to celebrate Grissom’s contributions to the American space program.

For those unable to attend the Friday evening festivities, the boyhood home will also be open for tours on Saturday, April 4, from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m..

Virgil “Gus” Grissom, a Mitchell native, was one of the original NASA Project Mercury astronauts and the second American to fly in space. This centennial celebration marks a significant milestone in preserving the history of his early life in Southern Indiana.
