Bloomington Parks and Recreation kicks off summer season with double openings

BLOOMINGTON — The local summer season officially arrives this weekend as Bloomington Parks and Recreation prepares for two major annual milestones: the return of the Bloomington Community Farmers’ Market and the seasonal opening of the Griffy Lake Boathouse.

52nd Season of the Community Farmers’ Market

The landmark 52nd season of the Bloomington Community Farmers’ Market begins this Saturday, April 4, at 8 a.m. at Showers Common at 401 Norton Morton Street. The market will run every Saturday, rain or shine, through October.

Market Details:

  • Hours: 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (April–September); 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (October).
  • Offerings: Early-season shoppers can expect meats, cheeses, eggs, honey, produce, and cut flowers, alongside sweet and savory prepared foods.
  • Community Outreach: Parks and Recreation Director Tim Street will host the first “Mayor’s Team at the Table” from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., inviting residents to discuss city interests.

Free parking is available in the lot north of City Hall. Metered street parking ($1/hr) and garage parking ($0.50/hr at Trades District or Morton Street garages) are also available. Accessibility spaces are reserved along Morton Street.

Griffy Lake Boathouse Reopens for 2026

Water enthusiasts can return to the lake starting April 4 and 5, with the boathouse operating from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends throughout the month.

Rental and Launch Information:

  • Rentals: Canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards are available for $12 per hour or a $100 10-hour punch pass.
  • Private Launch: Daily permits are $10 for both motorized (electric trolling only) and non-motorized craft. Annual permits range from $100 to $125.
  • New Requirement: All renters and permit holders must now present a state- or university-issued photo ID to improve safety and waiver accuracy.

2026 Season Schedule:

  • May–August: Daily, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • September: Daily, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. (New Hours)
  • October: Weekends only, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. (New Hours)

Fishing at Griffy Lake

The lake remains a prime spot for bluegill, largemouth bass, and channel catfish. Anglers are reminded that a valid Indiana fishing license is required and must be purchased via the DNR or local retailers, as they are not sold at the boathouse.
