Help Shape the Future: Indiana State Museum launches 2026 Visitor Survey

INDIANAPOLIS How can the Indiana State Museum and its 11 historic sites better serve you in 2026 and beyond? That is the question museum leaders are asking as they launch a new comprehensive visitor survey designed to shape the future of Hoosier heritage experiences.

The survey is part of the 2026 Annual Survey of Museum-Goers, a national initiative sponsored by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM). By participating, the Indiana State Museum joins a network of institutions across the country in a collective effort to understand the evolving needs, values, and motivations of the public.

Why Your Voice Matters

As Indiana prepares for a landmark year—including over 70 events scheduled for America’s 250th anniversary—the museum is looking to move beyond its role as a traditional steward of the past.

“We care deeply about making the experiences and events we share with you and our community meaningful,” museum officials stated. “To do that, we need your help in understanding visitors’ needs and values so we can better serve you.”

The 2026 national survey focuses on three key themes that will directly influence local decision-making:

  • Meaning and Value: Understanding how moments of “awe and wonder” in museum galleries can foster social connection and provide renewal in uncertain times.
  • Visitor Impact: Examining how guests perceive the value of specialized programming, memberships, and services.
  • Repeat Visitation: Identifying the types of engagement that keep Hoosiers coming back to the state’s historic sites year after year.

Take the Survey, Win Prizes

The questionnaire is designed to be quick and user-friendly, taking approximately nine minutes to complete. To thank participants for their time and insights, the museum is offering an opportunity to win one of ten gift cards from Amazon, Visa, or Bookshop.org.

The data collected will be benchmarked against national trends, helping the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites make data-driven decisions regarding future exhibits, such as the upcoming Indy A to Z and the interactive Flowers Forever experience.

The survey is currently open to all community members, whether you are a frequent visitor, a museum member, or someone who hasn’t visited in years.
