Volunteers needed for trail improvements at Griffy Lake Nature Preserve

BLOOMINGTON Bloomington Parks and Recreation, in partnership with the Hoosier Hikers’ Council (HHC), is calling for volunteers to assist with essential trail maintenance and construction at Griffy Lake Nature Preserve.

The upcoming workday will focus on the construction of a partial re-route for the Griffy Natural Trail loop. Community members interested in participating are asked to meet at the Griffy Lake Boathouse, located at 3400 North Headley Road, at 9:00 a.m.

Participants will engage in physical labor, including hiking, bending, climbing, and using hand tools to build new trail sections. While the work is labor-intensive, no prior trail-building experience is necessary. On-site training and all required tools will be provided by organizers.

Due to the nature of the work, the following guidelines are in place:

  • Age Limit: All volunteers must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Equipment: Volunteers should bring their own snacks and a reusable water bottle for refills throughout the shift.
  • Pre-Trial Diversion: Individuals intending to use these hours for Pre-Trial Diversion must complete a mandatory background check and receive approval from the Community Relations Coordinator before arriving. Failure to do so will result in hours not being counted toward service requirements.

The Hoosier Hikers’ Council will provide lunch for all volunteers. However, organizers noted that they are unable to accommodate special dietary restrictions, such as vegetarian or gluten-free needs. Volunteers with specific dietary requirements are encouraged to bring their own meals.
