BEDFORD — Community service took center stage on February 9 as the Bedford chapter of Altrusa International gathered at Hillcrest Christian Church. Presided over by Kathleen Row, the meeting brought together 18 members and three guests to coordinate several local outreach initiatives and philanthropic donations.
Spotlight on Lawrence County Cancer Patient Services
The evening’s guest speaker, Teena Ligman, represented Lawrence County Cancer Patient Services (LCCPS). Ligman provided a comprehensive overview of the organization’s history and its vital role in supporting local residents battling cancer.
She detailed the various fundraising efforts that allow LCCPS to provide direct assistance to patients, ranging from medical supplies to nutritional support. The presentation highlighted the ongoing need for community partnership to sustain these life-changing services.
Direct Community Impact
The members moved to approve a significant donation aimed at improving resources for the local homeless population. Altrusa voted to purchase a new printer/scanner/fax machine for the Men’s Warming Shelter.
This equipment is about more than just paper. It’s a tool to help clients navigate legal matters, secure housing, and apply for jobs.
Donna Rainey presented the $699 check to the shelter. This follows Rainey’s recent holiday outreach, where she delivered gift bags containing hygiene items, socks, snacks, and lap robes to residents of the CORE Nursing Home.

Committee Reports and Ongoing Projects
The meeting touched on several active service projects across the county.
Susie Turner provided an update on the Avoca Free Little Library, while Loretta Bailey reported delivering 20 magazines to five different area nursing homes.
Members arrived at the meeting with food donations to stock the Blessings Box at Hillcrest Church.

Sara Kern delivered the treasurer’s report, and Becky Bailey distributed the monthly newsletter. Fannie Lee stepped in to record minutes as acting secretary.
Fundraiser Alert: Gourmet Nuts Available
For those looking to support Altrusa’s charitable funds, Tammy Harrell announced a remaining supply of mixed nuts, walnuts, cashews, and pecans from the fall fundraiser. Bags are currently available for purchase at $13 each.
